Compiler, Researcher, Author - Notes to Sources, Citations

In a published Legacy, virtually every date and place could be footnoted; but, to include so many citations would be distracting to readers and overly burdensome to the compiler and editor, and would serve little practical purpose. The method employed has been selective such that chosen citations provide authority for those quotations and statements that go beyond common knowledge, including any particular sources that are not obvious, as well as those readers might want to consult for additional information.

Dates of births, marriages and deaths, for the most part, are not annotated. Many have been harvested from public records, church records, gravestones, obituaries and , especially for contemporary individuals, very often from data and information provided by relatives. No doubt these contain a few errors, although every effort has been made to check where reasonably possible and to guard against mistakes in transcription. Sometimes the published data conflict or are not fully accurate, and memories and family records and scraps of events collected can err. What appears here has been checked and re-checked as much as seems appropriate to establish the Legacy. Nevertheless, errors creep in as an inevitable consequence of compiling a large work of this nature. Over time, patient contributors will hopefully find the few errors, forgive them, and then notify the next compiler. When time permits, the web page edition will include all corrections and additions.

As for older records, traces of the individuals referred to herein who lived in pre-United States Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island are found principally in records of church vaults, collections from commonwealth records and anecdotal accounts. These records include some basic dates and a handful of additional facts, some in English, some in German, some in Pennsylvania Duthch dialect.

For European records of all three families, the situation is less fortunate. Record-keeping was a civil and church art form, not a rigorous disclipline with many authorities, civil and religious. Confirmations of the earliest Abernethy, Ray and Ralph original  records have been difficult to obtain.
