Organization & Numbering
There is no ideal or completely satisfactory way to organize a genealogy-based legacy in published form. The reason: ancestors stretch backwards in time in an ever-widening geometric progression; descendants appear to fan out, often in multiplying numbers, forward. Resembling a tree with spreading branches and deepening roots, wherever we start, the array in either direction grows wider and keeps subdividing. As a result, some readers may skip several pages forward or backward in order to follow a particular line or a sequence within a line. The inconvenience is incurable. The effort here has been to minimize inconveniences by providing numbers of subheadings to help facilitate locating the next ancestral level whenever it is necessary to shift to a different generation. An index of names will accompany the final edition of this publication.
All Abernathy ancestors in this Legacy account are summarized using the Sosa-Stradonitz numbering system, which is commonly used in Ahnentafel (pedigree) charts. It focuses all attention on the direct line from the initial individual, Oscar 'Buddy' Abernathy (no living Abernathys). He is assigned the number 1; his father is double that = 2; his mother is listed as the father's number plus 1 = 3; his paternal grandfather is double that of the father's number = 4; his paternal grandmother is listed as the grandfather's number plus 1 =5... In this system, the father designation of any individual is always double the number of the son, and the mother designation is always double plus 1. Male ancestors always have even numbers and females always have odd numbers. The system tiers the direct line of ancestors conveniently and clearly indicates which root ancestors are at the trunk of the family tree and which collateral ancestors are branches.
